The History Major

An undergraduate advisor assists each major in planning a curriculum to meet his or her personal interests. A "program plan," approved by the advisor, should be filed with the department as soon as possible. We recommend that students meet with an assigned advisor once every semester or sign a waiver during registration.

Contact the College of Arts and Humanities for advising for CORE and College requirements.

The History Department also offers a Central European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES) Major.

The History Department offers an East Asian Studies Certificate.

The History Honors Program allows promising undergraduates to develop historical and historiographical skills, in an atmosphere that guarantees personal attention and that encourages hard work and excellence. (We also offer other honors opportunities in conjunction with the University's Undergraduate Honors Program.)

We offer Study Abroad opportunities for History majors.

Visit the website of our affiliated program in Science, Technology and Society (STS) for information about the STS Undergraduate Certificate Program.

The History Department allows undergraduates to take up to 6 hours of credits in history-related Internships

The department sponsors a History Undergraduate Association which majors and other interested students are encouraged to join.

History majors edit and publish a web-based journal, Janus: The University of Maryland Undergraduate History Journal, which features student writings relevant to the study of history.

The department hosts a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honors society, which supports undergraduate activities, including a regional conference of student papers.
