Did You Know

The original 34 young men who enrolled on the first day of classes in 1859 took courses in:
  • Latin and Greek
  • Modern Languages
  • Natural Sciences
  • English
  • Mathematics
The original rules for students in 1859 included the following:
  • No tobacco, no profanity, no alcohol, no gambling, no guns, no duels or attendance at duels
  • Students required to deposit their pocket money with the Registrar and to ask his permission before they spent a nickel
The Civil War disrupted the campus
  • Abraham Lincoln received only 2,000 out of 92,000 votes in Maryland in the election of 1860
  • As the war intensified, many students and professors left the campus to fight for either the Union or the Confederacy
