Short Bios of the students enrolled in History 429I

  • Caroline Anderson is a sophomore double majoring in Government and Politics and U.S. History. She is active on campus with SGA, USJ, and University Senate. She was a member of the Maryland Room Research group and the Steering Committee for this report.
  • Tamara Arnold is a junior pursuing a double major in History and Women's Studies with a concentration in Society and Culture. She is Vice President of Programs for Triota - the Women's Studies Honors Society here at the University of Maryland. Her aspiration is to apply the skills learned about society and culture in order to combat global issues such as poverty and education; particularly her passion is social issues surrounding women and children. She was a member of the Riversdale Research group and the Public Relations Committee for this report.
  • Donald B. Caltrider, Jr. is a sophomore double major in International Business and History with a concentration in Early Modern Europe. Outside of school he is a private antique dealer specializing in 19th century photography, books, and ephemera. At Maryland, Donny is a member of UMCP Fencing Club and the Hinman CEOs Entrepreneurship program. He served as the chair of the Maryland State Archives Research group and was a member of the Steering Committee for this project.
  • Emma Coll is a junior History and American Studies Major at the University of Maryland. She is the Co-Community Service Chair for the Mortar Board Senior Honor's Society and was recently named a Philip Merrill Scholar. Next year Emma will be completing departmental Honors in American Studies and will participate in the Chillum Internship Program, developing classes for elementary students. She is hoping to pursue a graduate degree in educational policy after graduation. She was a member of the Maryland Room Research group and the Steering Committee for this report.
  • Natalia Cuadra-Saez is a sophomore double major in History and Classics with a minor in Religious Studies. Her concentration in History is in African Diaspora. At Maryland she is a member of the Honors program, Global Communities, and Primmanum honors society. She was a member of the Maryland Room Research group and the Public Relations Committee for this report.
  • Jessica Dwyer-Moss is a junior double-majoring in Government and Politics and History. She is a member of the University Honors Program, Beyond the Classroom living & learning program, and Pi Sigma Alpha political science honors society. Currently President of The Maryland Shakespeare Players, she is very involved with the performing arts. She was a member of the Maryland Room Research group and the Writing Committee for this report.
  • Christoff Funches is a senior Anthropology major with a focus in archaeology. His academic interest is in the history and archaeology of the African Diaspora. He was a member of the Maryland State Archives Research group and the Writing Committee for this report.
  • Mara James is a sophomore Government and Politics major and has a double minor in French and International Development and Conflict Management. At Maryland, she was a member of the College Park Scholars Public Leadership Program and the Beyond the Classroom program. She has been a trip leader for the Alternative Break Program and helped organize the first Alternative Winter Break trips. This summer, Mara plans to study abroad in Egypt and Israel with the University of Maryland studying religious conflicts. She was a member of the Maryland Room Research group and the Public Relations Committee for this report.
  • Rebekah Kass is a senior History major, with a concentration in Jewish History, and an English minor. This year she wrote a senior thesis as part of the History Honors Program that focused on the decision to have an egalitarian Bat Mitzvah service within Conservative Judaism in America. Rebekah is president of the History Undergraduate Association, as well as a member of Phi Alpha Theta (History Honors Fraternity) and Primannum Honor Society. She also competes as a member of the Maryland Academic Quiz Team and worked as a Program Assistant within the Department of Resident Life at the university. Rebekah plans to pursue either a doctoral degree in History or a law degree after taking some time off following graduation. She was a member of the Maryland State Archives Research group and served as the chair of the Steering Committee for this report.
  • Lauren Kaufman is a sophomore History major with an American History concentration. She is an active member of the campus radio station, WMUC-FM. Lauren will be studying abroad in Copenhagen for the Fall semester, and will be graduating next Spring. She was a member of the Maryland Room Research group and the Writing Committee for this report.
  • Ross Krublit is a senior double major in History and Geography, with concentrations in American History and Human Geography. At Maryland he was a member of the College Park Scholars - American Cultures and the Phi Alpha Theta history honors society. He has also worked in the Undergraduate Technology Apprenticeship Program, assisting Arts & Humanities faculty with classroom technology. After graduating in May 2009, Ross plans to enroll in WUJS Israel - Peace & Social Justice, a 6 month learning and internship program in Jerusalem, Israel. He was a member of the Maryland State Archives Research group and the Public Relations Committee for this report.
  • Mike Kurkjian is a sophomore double major in History and Communication. At Maryland he was a member of the College Park Scholars Media, Self, and Society Progam. He was a member of the Maryland and Prince George's County Historical Societies Research group and served as the chair of the Public Relations committee for this report.
  • Jasmine London is a junior English major with a concentration in African American Literature and a minor in Rhetoric. As a 2006 graduate of Charles H. Flowers High School in Springdale, Maryland and a native Marylander, it was only natural that Jasmine London would become a TERP, especially as the university has a great reputation in academics, athletics and school spirit throughout the state. After studying African American authors and being of African American descent, she found it essential to partake in the opportunity to research the university's connections with slavery. This experience will allow her to know more about Prince George's County as well as enhance Jasmine's awareness of slavery. She was a member of the Riversdale Research group and the Writing Committee for this report.
  • Ana Rosas is a senior majoring in History and Spanish, with concentrations in Western European history and Spanish Language and Literature. She has participated in several student organizations such as Harmony's Cross a student acapella group, and held executive board positions within the Latino Student Union (LSU), and the Latino Honors Caucus. As a member of LSU she has volunteered in the surrounding college park community visiting high school students to speak about the importance of attending college, and to inform those communities about the resources available to finance a college education. In addition, she has been inducted into the Maryland chapters of both the history and Spanish honors societies, Phi Alpha Theta and Sigma Delta Pi. Upon graduation Ana will attend the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor in pursuit of a Master of Science in Information. She was a member of the Maryland State Archives Research group and the Writing Committee for this report.
  • Jonathan Sachs is a junior in Government and Politics major. During his time at Maryland, he graduated from the College Park Scholars - Public Leadership program, is in the Government and Politics Honors program, and a Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Scholar. Jonathan has served as the President of the Student Body, President of the College Democrats, as a University Senator, and will serve as the student liaison to the city of College Park next year. He has also interned for two state Delegates, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and will intern for the House Energy and Commerce Committee this summer. He was a member of the Riversdale Research group and the Public Relations Committee for this report.
  • Kevin Valdez is a senior History major with a concentration in United States history. After graduating in May of 2009 Kevin will be attending Washington University School of Law in St. Louis Missouri. He was a member of the Maryland and Prince George's County Historical Societies Research group and the Steering Committee for this report.
  • Grace Waldron is a sophmore history major at the University of Maryland. She has lived in Silver Spring, Maryland her entire life. She was a member of the Riversdale Research group and served as the chair of the Writing Committee for this report.
  • Shoshi Weiss is a junior History major linguistics minor at the University of Maryland. She completed the American Cultures citation in the College Park Scholars program, and is an active member of the University of Maryland Hillel. She works as a Park Ranger at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Maryland and Prince George's County Historical Societies Research group and the Writing Committee for this report.
