History and Library Science Master of Arts (HiLS) Dual-Degree Program

Organized in the late 1970s, the History and Library Science Master of Arts (HiLS) dual-degree program is jointly run between the Department of History and the College of Information Studies.

Satisfying the employment demands of libraries, museums, and archives in the public sector and private industry, the program prepares students for archival and bibliographic research, archives management, curatorship, conservation, and public history interpretation through an interdisciplinary program of traditional historical methodology and cutting-edge archival and technology skills.

Structured as a three-year program of study and training, the HiLS program requires fifty-four (54) credit hours, including a minimum twenty-four (24) hours in the Department of History.

The program must be completed in five (5) years.

Admission requirements for the HiLS dual-degree program combine requirements for the MA in History and the MLS. Successful applicants make the case that they maintain a strong academic interest in historical scholarship and research while also seeking professional training in areas such as archive management, public history, reference librarianship, and/or information systems.

The application deadline is December 15.

As of Fall 2006, a revised web-based description of the HiLS program is under preparation. In the interim, prospective and current students should consult the guidelines for the Master of Arts in History and the Master of Library Science.

For additional information on application requirements, visit the joint CLIS-History HiLS webpage.
