Historic Preservation
Certificate Program in Historic Preservation
The Department of History is closely involved with the Graduate
Program in Historic Preservation, housed in the School of Architecture.
Since its inception in 1986,
Historic Preservation has drawn together the appropriate courses
and seminar offerings of American Studies, Anthropology,
Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Urban Studies
and Planning, as well as History, to form a twenty-four (24) credit
interdisciplinary curriculum. Certificate courses usually are
taken in conjunction with the Master of Arts or the Master of
Architecture degrees, and are designed to help prepare students
for a range of careers in the planning, management and
conservation of significant cultural, natural and historical
resources. Requirements include the introductory seminar, a
survey of preservation law, an internship, twelve (12) hours of core
courses, and the final seminar. Field work training in such
techniques as site documentation and photography of historic
structures benefits from cooperative relationships with the U. S.
National Park Service.
