Science and Technology

The history of technology is represented in the graduate programs of the University of Maryland History Department in several ways. All students in the department may enroll in graduate-level courses in the field, and many integrate one or two of these courses into graduate concentrations in a variety of fields, such as modern U.S. History, European History, and Women's and Gender History.

In addition to these options, the history of technology is a graduate field option for graduate students in the Department of History. Students may choose to concentrate in History of Technology. Current faculty strengths can only effectively support study in modern American and European technology, although students are encouraged to broaden their explorations as appropriate.

The History Department offers several specialized options that may be of interest to students in the history of technology. A joint degree program in History and Library Sciences (HILS) is of particular interest to students heading towards a career in archives and historical collections. Museum-oriented students will be interested in the Certificate in Museum Studies. Those concerned with Historic Preservation will find the program in that field one of the best available. Any of these options may be combined with study for a graduate degree in history of technology.

Potential applicants are encouraged to look at the general description of the History Department's Graduate Programs for further information on requirements and application procedures.

Graduate courses taught by the Department of History that are particularly appropriate for study of the history of technology include:

HIST 606 General Seminar in the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology
HIST 609 Readings in the History of Science and Technology
HIST 669 Readings in the Economic and Business History of the United States
HIST 678 Readings in American Labor History
HIST 778 Readings in European Economic and Labor History
HIST 808 Seminar in the History of Science and Technology
HIST 893 Seminar in the Economic and Business History of the United States
HIST 894 Seminar in American Labor History

In addition, core faculty in the field regularly offer graduate-level seminars (as HIST 619, etc.) in business history, military history, and related special topics. Courses in HISP (Historic Preservation) might be substituted as appropriate to the student's program and as available.

These upper-level undergraduate courses also may be taken for graduate credit (see specific M.A. and Ph.D. degree requirement for credit limits):

HIST 405 Environmental History
HIST 406 History of Technology
HIST 407 Technology and Social Change in History
HIST 450 Economic History of the United States to 1865
HIST 451 Economic History of the United States after 1865
HIST 460 History of Labor in the United States
The University also offers UNIV 401 – the Science, Technology, and Society: Certificate Program Capstone Seminar.
