Thank you for visiting the home page of the graduate program in history at the University
of Maryland, the flagship campus of the University System of Maryland. Highlights of our most recent notable achievements are to be found in the semiannual News and Notables online newsletter.
Our fields of noted excellence are US, African American, women
and gender, Latin American, and Central/Eastern European/Russian history. Other
areas of established strength are the history of Western Europe, the Ancient
Mediterranean, and East Asia, as well as Jewish history and the history of science
and technology. Working with partners in Europe, Latin America, and East Asia,
we are developing exciting new programs in Atlantic history, the African diaspora,
Middle Eastern/Islamic history, and international/transnational/comparative history.
The 150 students
in our three degree programs come from across the nation, from small liberal
arts colleges and major research institutions, as well as from the Balkans,
Canada, East Asia, Eurasia, the European Union, and Latin America. Our doctoral
candidates are hard at work in libraries and archives located in the Baltimore-Washington region and far afield. Our most recent graduates
have started postdoctoral fellowships or permanent positions at institutions that include Christopher Newport University,
the Federal Judicial Center, John Carroll University, King's College London, Loras College, the Maryland Historical Society, Morgan State University, Ohio University, Southern Methodist University, the United States Naval Academy, the University
of South Florida, the University of Southern Mississippi, and Western Washington University. The members of our extended alumni community, numbering over
three hundred master of arts and doctoral recipients, work as professional historians
throughout the State of Maryland, in a number of United States Government agencies,
and at institutions of higher education and historical research across the United
States and the globe.
