The Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center
Short-Term Resident Scholar Program

The Miller Center Short-Term Resident Scholar Program was created in 2012 to facilitate dialogue between the university's intellectual community and visiting scholars doing research relevant to the Center’s yearly theme, who would benefit from the opportunity to utilize the many resources available at the university as well as in the Washington, DC area.

In 2012-2013, the Center’s theme will be "Constructing Historical Knowledge: Historians Confront Categories of Discourse."
For a detailed description of the theme, click
here.

In the upcoming academic year, the Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies at the University of Maryland will offer two Miller Center Short-Term Residencies (for a minimum of one and a maximum of three weeks), one in Fall 2012 and one in Spring 2013. Each Miller Short-Term Resident Scholar will contribute an unpublished paper to serve as the basis of one of the Center’s workshops. The topic of the paper should be relevant to the chosen theme for the academic year.

Each Miller Short-Term Resident Scholar will also participate in a working luncheon with our graduate students and, if possible, will offer a lecture/discussion in one of our undergraduate courses. S/he will receive a stipend of $800 per week (for up to three weeks) plus a $500 honorarium for submission of the unpublished workshop paper, along with coverage of travel and lodging expenses and the university’s standard per diem for food.

Applications should include a CV and list of references, a 100-word abstract of the workshop paper, and an 800-word proposal illustrating how the applicant’s research is pertinent to the Center’s yearly theme. Faculty, independent scholars, and advanced doctoral students are invited to apply. Submission deadline: June 21, 2012.

We welcome inquiries and electronic submissions of application material at umdhistorycenter@gmail.com.
