About Key & Taliaferro Halls
So, hey, why do these buildings resemble partially-conjoined twins? Well actually, one gave birth to the other:
Taliaferro Hall
- 1894/96 (?) - Constructed; called "Mechanical Engineering Building."
- 1904 - West wing annex constructed; housed forge, foundry and central steam plant.
- 1909 - East wing constructed; called "Mechanical Building."
- 1925 - Called "Engineering Group" and housed Engineering Departments.
- 1932 - Part of Francis Scott Key building constructed.
- 1939/40 - Rest of what is now called Francis Scott Key constructed.
- 1942 - Named "Commerce Building."
- 1954 - Named "Taliaferro," after Thomas Hardy Taliaferro, Dean of the College of Engineering, and later, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- 1961 - West section razed.
- c. 1950 - Used by College of Business and Public Administration
Francis Scott Key Building
- 1932 - Constructed east section.
- 1939/40 - Constructed center (main) section.
- 1954 - Named "Francis Scott Key Building."
