Technology, Science, and Environment The History of technology, science, and environment is represented in the graduate programs of the University of Maryland History Department in several ways. All students in the department may enroll in graduate-level courses in the field, and many integrate one or two of these courses into graduate concentrations in a variety of fields, such as modern U.S. History, European History, and Women's and Gender History. In addition to these options, the History of technology, science, and environment is a graduate field option for graduate students in the Department of History. Students may choose to concentrate in History of technology, science, and environment. Current faculty strengths can only effectively support study in modern American and European technology, science and environment although students are encouraged to broaden their explorations as appropriate. The History Department offers several specialized options that may be of interest to students in the History of technology, science, and environment. A joint degree program in History and Library Sciences (HILS) is of particular interest to students heading towards a career in archives and historical collections. Museum-oriented students will be interested in the Certificate in Museum Studies. Those concerned with Historic Preservation will find the program in that field one of the best available. Any of these options may be combined with study for a graduate degree in History of technology, science, and environment.
