Its overall objective is to facilitate reciprocal use of PRC and US archives by American and Chinese researchers, thus contributing to a broader understanding of key intellectual issues in the humanities and social sciences. Collaborating institutions are the University of Maryland and National Archives II at College Park on the US side, and ten major provincial and city-level archives in mainland China and Hong Kong. This program organizes workshops on archival management and conferences on Chinese historical studies based on archival work. This program also organizes study tours and training for Chinese archivists and US China specialists. These study tours introduce state-of-the-art technology and methods of archives management. This program exposes our faculty and graduate students to Chinese archival sources and historiography. The Maryland-Chinese Local Archives Exchange Program also works with archives of Chinese ethnic minorities to expand American knowledge about China's frontiers and strengthen the ties with the Chinese remote provinces that have yet to develop sufficient exchange programs with the United States.
