East Asian History

The Department of History at the University Maryland offers undergraduate and graduate programs in East Asian history. Courses cover the modern and pre-modern histories of China, Japan, and Korea. Our faculty's diverse research interests encompass social, cultural, urban, political, and gender history, providing students with the opportunity to become acquainted with a variety of historical subfields and methodologies. An array of East Asia-related courses are offered trough other departments, including Government & Politics and Art History & Archeology, as well as the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

The easy access to research resources, including the East Asian collections on campus and document records at the nearby National Archives and Library of Congress, is one of our strongest assets. The University of Maryland is also home to the world-renowned Gordon W. Prange Collection of print publications in Occupied Japan (1945-49). Every year, the Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies offers two grants to support research in the Prange Collection. In addition, the Department's close ties with various East Asian institutions both in the greater Washington metropolitan area and abroad provide for a stimulating learning environment.
