East Asian History

Graduate Programs

The Department of History at the University of Maryland offers comprehensive MA and PhD programs in East Asian history. While students should concentrate their studies on either China or Japan, all students are required to gain good knowledge and understanding of East Asia in general. Applicants planning to pursue the PhD degree in East Asian history are expected to master sufficient language training in the target East Asian language. Potential applicants are encouraged to look at the general description of the History Department's Graduate Programs for further information on requirements and application procedures.

Each year the Department offers special fellowships to outstanding candidates and nominates others for University-level fellowships. Some entering students may be offered teaching assistantships. To be eligible for these awards, students must submit all application materials by the December 15 deadline. We also have an endowment for annual awards to support graduate research expenses.

Our faculty members offer diverse perspectives and approaches to teaching and research. We encourage students to explore different methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of history, and our courses and areas of expertise range from political, diplomatic, and economic history to the fields of social, cultural, urban, and gender history. The graduate courses in East Asian history offered by our faculty on a regular basis include:

  • HIST 619 Chinese Cities and Frontiers
  • HIST 619 Family, Gender, and Sexuality in Early Modern China
  • HIST 619 Chinese Cultural History and Its Literary Sources
