  • Chinese Study in Beijing (2006-2007): William Howes, a Ph.D student in Modern Chinese History, obtained a Chinese Education Scholarship for one year of language study in China.   He has enrolled at Peking University, Beijing, China.
  • Chinese Study in Beijing (2005-2006): William Howes, a Ph.D student in Modern Chinese History, obtained the Chinese Education Scholarship for one year of language study in China. He has enrolled at Peking University, China.
  • Study Chinese in Beijing (2005-2006): Chris Heselton, an undergraduate Honors History major concentrating on East Asia, obtained a Chinese Education Scholarship for one year of language study in China.   He enrolled at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute, Beijing, China.
  •  Faculty Sabbatical Leave (2005-2006): Professor James Gao was appointed Research Fellow of the Institute for International Studies, Johns Hopkins University; while in residence at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in China, he worked on his book project -- Rice and Authority: Market Politics in Shanghai, 1900-1955.
  • Post-Doctoral Fellow (2005-2006): Professor Andrea S. Goldman was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford University to work on her book manuscript, "The Staging of Urban Culture in Beijing, 1770-1900."  
  •  Maryland Day in Beijing: September 17, 2005, University of Maryland held a Maryland Day on the campus of Peking University, China in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the University of Maryland.
  • East Asian Aid : On September 7, 2005, the State Department announced that it has accepted nearly a billion dollars in pledges of foreign aid following Hurricane Katrina, including donations from East Asian countries.   Among them, South Korea sent $30 million cash and in-kind donations; China, $5.1 million cash and relief supplies; Japan, $200,000 cash, $844,000 in relief supplies, and $1.5 million in private donations; Taiwan, $2 million cash and medical supplies.
