interim report

In the interest of academic transparency, I have posted the manuscript minutes of the discussions among the contributors to the book, Missions and Empire (2005), part of the Oxford History of the British Empire, Companion Series, at a meeting in Basel, Switzerland, in 2003.  The book was edited by Norman Etherington, who compiled these minutes and who graciously has given his permission for their public display.

Because of the official and formal nature of the Oxford series and its like, it seemed like a good idea to open up the deliberations of the contributors to closer inspection from any interested publics.  These minutes are neither exhaustive nor (in my opinion) entirely accurate, but they more than adequately capture the main issues we considered, ideas we bruited that did not make it into the volume, criticism we levelled at one another, and our underlying aims in writing our initial drafts, some of which differ from the published versions.

Please note the provisional nature of this document, and refrain from quoting from it in any published form, without first securing the permission of the individual(s) whom you wish to quote. Note also the wide scope of the volume, which pertains to the entire history of British imperialsim and not merely Africa. Because the posting on the web site is not permanent, I ask that the browser address not be further published.
