          Professor Zhang joined the history department at the University of Maryland in 1993. He is author of Deterrence and Strategic Culture: Chinese-American Confrontations, 1949-58 (Cornell University Press, 1992), Mao's Military Romanticism: China and the Korean War, 1950-53 (Kansas, 1994), Economic Cold War: America's Embargo against China and The Sino-Soviet Alliance, 1949-1963 (Wilson Center-Stanford, 2001). He co-edited with Jian Chen, Chinese Communist Foreign Policy and the Cold War in Asia, 1944-1950: Documentary Evidence (Imprint, 1996). In 1990-91 Zhang was an Olin Foundation postdoctoral fellow in international security at Yale University. He received a Norwegian Nobel Institute fellowship in international studies for the spring of 1995 (Oslo, Norway). He was also awarded a Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Shanghai International Studies University (Shanghai, China) in 2000. In August 2003, he was appointed director of the Institute for Global Chinese Affairs, University of Maryland.
